11 eN The years directly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the quickly executed German reunification were adventurous times espe cially in Prenzlauer Berg Many of the flats and houses in the area were abandoned and were quickly discovered by young peo ple from all over Germany and Europe One simply set up house with or without a lease In terms of local administration times were confusing to say the least And confusing would be a beni gn word to describethe ownership structures The legal owners of many of the Wilhelminian era buildings could no longer be es tablished War and expulsion dispossessions during the GDR period and naturally also un settled inheritance claims led to a situation in which entire blocks of houses were neither renovated nor sold for years on end In particular young people were attracted to the romantically di lapidated quarter around Koll witzplatz Helmholtzplatz and the area surrounding the Ebers walder Strasse metro station It was an exciting period of time in which a new Berlin youth culture was coming to the fore the roots of which were finely intertwined with Prenzlberg as the area came to be known in Berlin Small stores sprang up as well as bars and restaurants still on a highly improvisational level but amiable and typical for the new spirit of optimism By the second half of the 1990s Prenzlauer Berg had achieved a cult status which extended far beyond German bor ders It was not only legendary in Europe but also overseas The lifestyle industry in particular sent trend scouts to the area to investigate the budding art and gastronomy scenes Prenzlberg was suddenly hip it was fea tured on the front covers of natio nal and international magazines No wonder its adventurous be ginnings steeped in youth cul ture had meanwhile grown into very adult commercial structures though in many places the charm of the early years was maintai ned In reality the district still offers room for new developments which cannot be found in other areas of Berlin As a young ent repreneurial tier has established itself innovative service ideas have been born here and conti nue to assert themselves But it was the fast spreading par ty and music scene with its net work of bars and trendy locations that continued to lend glamour to the legend of Prenzlauer Berg PreNzlauer berg VOm sPatz zum ParadiesVOgel PRENzlAuER BERG FROM SPARROW TO BIRD OF PARADISE MAuERPARK BEARPIT KARAOKE MAuERPARK KIEzFEST AuFTRITT JIM AvIGNON visitBerlin Günter Steffen Andreas Schmidt tic Stefanie Gronau tic
